  • A Brief History of South Vigo High School

Here is a glimmer into the history of our school. In the words of a former teacher, Dave Heath, “Once a Brave, Always a Brave!”

Terre Haute South Vigo High School opened its doors for the first time in the Fall of 1971.  Originally, the school housed Grades 10-12.  In 1993, Grade 9 was moved from Junior High School into High School, which meant all high school credits would be earned in the same building instead of being transferred and allowed for Grade 6 to be moved out of the elementary schools into the concept of middle schools.  South Vigo is located at 7th and Davis Streets.  It is the consolidation of Wiley High School (1912-1971) and Honey Creek High School (1926-1971).  Honey Creek High School was the result of an earlier consolidation of Blackhawk High School (1919-1971), Pimento High School (1919-1961), Prairie Creek High School (1917-1961), and Prairieton High School (1924-1927).   It is interesting to note that Wiley High School was the second high school to open in Terre Haute, Indiana.
